Unplugged Education: No Batteries Required

Educators are faced daily with the increasingly difficult challenges of navigating the rocky terrain of current social and cultural norms. Currently, one of the biggest obstacles to overcome involves the use of screens in education. While this is not going away anytime soon, the question arises: how can educators nurture a healthy balance?

Caren Barber, like many educators, believes the way to combat this issue is to offer exciting, hands-on learning experiences—a radical idea in this day and age. Even if a technology-free learning experience cannot be provided every day, there should be some permanent aspect of hands-on learning available to students that ignites a thirst for genuine, authentic learning within schools, right at their fingertips.

This session will explore realistic ways educators can implement these experiences while inspiring students to independently explore hands-on learning.

Rolling With the Punches: Art Teacher Style

Education and the art world are ever changing—never the same twice, and never standing still. Join Shelby Mooneyham in this session to talk about rolling with the punches in the ever-changing world of art education. Even after five full years of teaching, Mooneyham is always evolving and changing the way she does things. It's never been, nor will it be, a perfect science. This session will cover how to adjust, become flexible, and take a deep breath when the system educators once knew becomes more chaotic than a Monday morning trying to get in and get the day started. Attendees are encouraged to bring their coffee, tea, and definitely water, and sit with Mooneyham to talk about rolling with the punches, art teacher style.

By the end of the hour, you'll have a yearly art curriculum map for a target grade level finished.

Come prepared to roll up your sleeves! Be sure to bring plenty of Post-It notes, your state or national art standards, your school calendar, and anything else that will help you plan your year.

Soft Sculpture Plushies

In this session you will explore a mixed-media art project where students can learn basic sewing techniques by designing and creating their own plushies. Emphasizing creativity and sustainability, students repurposed old T-shirts as fabric for their creations. The project guides students through multiple stages of the artistic process, including sketching and planning original designs, incorporating imaginative and whimsical elements, and applying acrylic painting techniques to add color and personality to their finished plushies. Through this hands-on experience, students developed skills in drawing, design, sewing, painting, and creative problem-solving.
